Romance isn’t a genre I spend a lot of time with, outside of Romantasy that plays more into the Fantasy that I enjoy reading. This isn’t greatly owing to any dislike of the genre, but it doesn’t seem to play into the things that I like as much as other genres might. But this book is an absolutely outstanding read.
The book follows the journey of Baroness Evelyn Everest, a noble with a dark secret, she’s an artist of sorts. When her secret is uncovered, the subject of her art takes it upon himself to play a little game, one with grand consequences. The issue? The subject is the Crown Prince.
What follows is a romance that challenges gender and etiquette norms of the time, with a raft of fun characters who will 100% scratch the Bridgerton itch that you might be having about now. I loved Evelyn as a protagonist, both a woman out of time, and yet one still very much bound by it, Herra her best friend who is a breath of fresh air throughout the story. The gallant Prince Cedric, who is at once a wish fulfilment fantasy of an MMC while still being a believable personality.
This book was so much fun to read, and I would 100% recommend this to anyone at all, not only those who love period romances, although ESPECIALLY those people. I will also not the quality of the prose throughout, a lot of period drama tends to be either overwritten, or painfully underwritten. This was fantastic from start to finish.
4.5 stars, I will absolutely be buying a physical copy of this one.
