Beach Read – Emily Henry

If Romance tropes were a novel, it would be this book.

January and Gus are your typical odd couple (but maybe, not so much?). Writers who through a phenomenal set of coincidences end up living next door to each other on the beach.

When January finds out her parent  perfect marriage was something of a lie, the happy ending loving romance writer suddenly can’t bare to write about happily ever afters she no longer believes in.

Gus, who never believed in them in the first place, is working through issues of his own.

Can they find solace in each other? Or are they just too different?

If you’ve ever read a romance novel, you’ll predict this book about 30 seconds in. But as far as trope loaded, cliche ridden romances go, this was plenty of fun.

The characters are likeable, they releationship makes sense, even if it needs cosmic intervention to stop straining my credulity.

It’s a charming little read, and I enjoyed it just fine. I got it second hand in paperback for a couple of bucks and that feels about right.

For anyone that cares, there is spice but nothing extreme or graphic.

3 stars.
